March 16
No town has more road trip cred than Winslow
It was a major stop on the Santa Fe railroad and on Route 66.
But for most Baby Boomers and those of us just a little bit older, it will always be the home of one of the best song lyrics of all time from the Eagles "Take It Easy" :
Well I'm a-standin' on a corner in
Winslow Arizona,
Such a fine sight to see:
It's a girl, my Lord,
In a flat-bed Ford
Slowin' down to take a look at me.
Flowers at the base of the statue were for a member of the Eagles who checked out recently
Anyone I know up there?
And of course someone reminded me
"Take It Easy" was written by Jackson Browne.
But for me it will always be an Eagles song.
Nearly lunch time so went down the street to the Brown Mug Cafe. This old school small town diner had great Mexican food. Any time you go into an ethnic restaurant and it is full of that nationality you know you're in for good grub.
So my booth had a bit of duct tape on a crack in the corner. The waitress told me it was the same booth Harrison Ford sat in.
My combo plate was the best with the kind of stringy gooey cheese that won't stay on your fork and green chili sauce that made my nose run. Yummm.
Just across the street was the historic 1929 La Posada Hotel, one of the last great railroad hotels and known as one of the fanciest on Route 66.
Inside is fully restored with many southwestern touches.
Continuing on Route 66 tomorrow West toward home.
